In July, she embarks on a global adventure, collecting stories & images for a book she is creating that not only challenges social & cultural norms of birth in the modern world, but leaves its readers feeling empowered, educated, and enthusiastic.

Melbourne, Australia, February 22, 2016, Angela Gallo is a professional home birthing support person (Doula) and Birth Photographer living on the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Victoria. Besides her regular intake of clients, she most recently attained a distinguished ‘Honourable Mention’ at the Annual Image of the Year competition with The International Association of Birth Photographers. In July, she embarks on a global adventure, collecting stories and images for a book she is creating. Her Mission is to assemble a collection of work that will empower women to have a positive outlook and birthing experience.

Scientific studies, such as the one published by the Health Services Research Centre, Akershus University Hospital, Lørenskog, Norway, illustrate that “The duration of labour was longer in women with fear of childbirth than in women without fear of childbirth.” The fear of childbirth instilled by modern cultures creates undue stress that can impact the unborn child. Angela will study the childbirth practices in a wide variation of cultures from around the world.

During a recent interview, Angela made these comments: “Women want more out of their individual experiences. They are hungry for positive change in birth culture. This is my opportunity to create a book that not only challenges social & cultural norms of birth in the modern world, but leaves its readers feeling empowered, educated, and enthusiastic. Three components that we know are necessary in the pursuit of better outcomes and better experiences for women AND their families.”

For 6 months she plans to travel alongside her husband and 2 children. Together, they will explore pregnancy, birth, and parenting, as practiced among different cultures. Visiting people and professionals who share her passion, photographing births of varying degrees, exploring tradition admonished in Western culture, highlighting areas that need change, praising those who do amazing work, and enjoying intimate conversations with mothers who share her vision – all the while documenting every second of her experience and sharing via various media platforms.

Angela’s aim is to create a body of work that inspires women and men to feel positive about birth. ‘Birth in a Big World’ (Pending title) is the perfect marriage between art and activism. A book that is deliciously gorgeous, and mega inspiring, while also encouraging women to approach their personal experiences with a grace and confidence they’ve accumulated from closely following her work.

In order to finance travel & production of the book, she is crowdfunding via Indiegogo. Angela is endeavoring to raise $25,000 USD, with a campaign end date being April 17, 2016. She is also seeking sponsorship, donations, or endorsement. This is a great opportunity to be part of a revolution in thinking about giving birth. Great perks await those who sponsor this campaign. Although financial sponsorship is preferred, the project could benefit immensely from alternative contributions, such as: Airfare and Accommodation, Camera or Video Equipment, Publisher and Print related, and Advertising & Marketing.
