The New Mexico Showdown is in its 8th year, and has had a tremendous impact on the wrestling community. This tournament has sold out the past 2-years and draws up to 24 different states from as far away as Georgia. During a recent press conference, Adam Gutierrez, President of RMN Events, made these comments: “People hear quite often about the wrestlers from New Mexico and that area and simply want to experience different styles.” The Santa Ana Star Center, a state-of-the-art facility is the host of the tournament and is also home of the New Mexico High School State Championships in February.
He goes on to say: “It really gives the kids a great opportunity to compete in the same venue that will become so important in their high school career. Getting the edge of your mind of a new place to compete can become a stumbling block when a State title is on the line.” K-9th grade wrestlers come from all over the country to compete and the New Mexico Showdown along with the Aztec Warrior held in April have become the largest wrestling tournaments in the state of New Mexico, Arizona and Texas.
Over 4-foot tall trophies are awarded to all first place champions along with custom one-of-a-kind outstanding wrestler belts in each division. First through 3rd place team awards are also a huge part of the tournament. RMN Events wants to inspire, encourage and recognize not only the wrestlers but the parents and coaches that devote their entire life to their kids, teammates and teams. Gutierrez added; “We are looking forward to attracting larger teams that have not ever attended this season as the tournament has become the place to be on February 14, 2016.”
Wrestlers can register at www.rmnevens.com/newmexicoshowdown Registration is $50 if you register before the deadline. It is encouraged to register before the deadline to assure your place in the tournament, last January over 150 competitors were turned away because of the sell-out.
