The nine-bedroom mansion sits on 1.6 acres in the Hancock Park neighborhood in a gated community called Fremont Place, which is known for its historic mansions. This opulent home has hosted guests such as Barack Obama, Clint Eastwood, Sylvester Stallone and John Travolta. It hit the market on what would have been Ali’s 77th birthday.

Los Angeles, California, February 7, 2019, It is not often that an opulent mansion such as the former home of Muhammad Ali is offered for sale. Stefani Stolper of Douglas Elliman was pleased to announce the availability of this historic home. Ali, who died three years ago at 74, is considered one of the greatest boxers of all time.

Built in 1916, the stately home fits right in with the historic estates of Fremont Place. It was designed by John C. Austin, the noted architect responsible for Los Angeles staples such as the Griffith Observatory, the Shrine Auditorium, the Hollywood Masonic Temple and Los Angeles City Hall. Spanning 1.6 acres, the property centers on a 13,433-square-foot mansion with Nine bedrooms and Nine bathrooms, not to mention a 1016 square foot guest house. Dramatic chandeliers top living spaces replete with stone fireplaces, wood paneling and stained-glass windows.

The Wall Street Journal reports that Mrs. Ali decorated the house to look “like a museum, with gilded furniture, Renaissance paintings, Oriental rugs, and huge standing urns”. The house features stained glass windows by Louis Comfort Tiffany and has its own bar and lounge area. Ali and his wife, Veronica Porché Ali, bought the home in 1979, around the time Ali retired from professional boxing. They lived there with their two children until they separated in 1986. The home is currently owned by Michael Lawson and Maddie McFadden-Lawson. Mr. Lawson was previously a partner in the law firm of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom and later served President Obama as Ambassador to the International Civil Aviation Organization. Mr. Lawson now serves as the CEO and President of the Los Angeles Urban League. Ms. McFadden-Lawson served on President Obama’s Advisory Committee on the Arts.

Highlights include a grand entry hall, a formal dining room, a living room with bay windows, a den with a wet bar and a rounded breakfast nook. On the side of the home, a half-circle sun room receives light from glass ceilings. A fireplace anchors the master suite, which opens to a column-lined deck. The landscaped grounds also hold a flagstone patio, a grassy yard and a series of fountains and lounges.

The listing has already generated a considerable amount of interest on a global scale. Viewings can be scheduled by contacting Stefani Stolper of Douglas Elliman.
